FAQ
An environmental commission is a group of volunteers, appointed by the Mayor, helping to protect their communities’ environment. Environmental commissions work on many issues, including open space preservation, smart growth, wetlands and water resource protection, green infrastructure, recycling and litter, environmental cleanups, wildlife habitat, energy efficiency and conservation and transportation.
Environmental Commissions advise their local governments and act as watchdogs for environmental problems and opportunities. They inform elected officials and the public, serve on committees, research issues, develop educational programs and advocate for sound environmental policies. Environmental commissions use a wide range of information and approaches to inform local governments and residents on environmental issues, laws and programs. · Promote regional and long-range environmental planning; · Reach local citizens through education programs, publications and meetings; · Work with neighboring commissions and other organizations to address regional and state-wide environmental problems; and · Play a coordinating role among the diverse actors in environmental protection: the Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), Soil Conservation Districts, local planning boards, boards of health and utilities authorities.

If you are interested in an application that is being considered by either the planning board or the board of adjustment, it is advisable that you learn as much as you can about the application prior to the public hearing. Applications and plans are on file in the City Hall and are available to the public for review. Particularly, you will want to know if the proposal meets all of the requirements of the zoning ordinance. If a proposal meets all of the zoning requirements, the board’s jurisdiction over the application is limited. However, regardless of whether variances are required, the boards will be evaluating the proposal based upon intent of both the zoning ordinance and master plan, the presentation of the applicant, and comments from concerned citizens like you. For more information, contact Crystal Lawton, the Administrative Officer for the Planning Board and Board of Adjustments, at (609) 397-0803.
